There
are a number of great steps you can take that will help keep your home
comfortable while helping you save money and energy all year long.
Appliances &
Electronics
- Did you know as much as 8
percent of your electric bill may be to power electronic devices you
believed were off? Many home electronics such as computers,
cable TV boxes, and televisions continue using power even when
they are turned off. Plug these electronics into power strips and
turn the strips off when the equipment is not in use.
- Think about switching to a new,
modern washing machine. They use less water to get clothes just as
clean and also spin faster, squeezing more water out and reducing
drying time. They can save you $75 a year on your electric bill alone.
Refrigerators and
Freezers
- Removing an old
second refrigerator or freezer can save you up to $150 a year in
energy costs.
- Refrigerators are usually the
second biggest user of energy in a home. Help the refrigerator
maintain its efficiency by regularly cleaning the coils at the back
or bottom of the unit.
- A full freezer/refrigerator
actually uses less electricity. If necessary, stock the empty
space with filled plastic water bottles.
- Check the seal on refrigerator
door by closing the door over a dollar bill or slip of paper. If you can
pull it out easily, clean or replace the seal.
Lighting
- If you aren't in the room, turn
off the lights - either by flicking the switch or unplugging the light
entirely.
- Replacing just five light bulbs
in high-traffic areas with energy efficient compact florescent bulbs you
can save up to $60 a year. A single CFL can save up to $50 over its
lifetime.
